AQUA – a window into life in freshwater
AQUA Aquarium & Animal Park opened in 1993 and is today one of Silkeborg's biggest attractions.
Here, visitors can experience the wildlife in and around the Danish lakes and streams – both above and below the water.
With its associated animal park and nature center, AQUA is also an important information center for children, young people and adults.
The Arboretum – a living outdoor learning space
Between AQUA and the Silkeborg Lakes lies the 14-hectare Arboretum Paludosum – a wetland arboretum with trees and shrubs from all over the temperate world.

The story behind Vejlsøhus
Vejlsøhus was founded in 1903 as Denmark's first sanatorium for tuberculosis patients.
Among the patients was the famous artist Asger Jorn who created the work The wheel of life during his stay – a work of art that today hangs at Silkeborg Library.
The sanatorium treated patients until 1958, when tuberculosis was almost eradicated in Denmark.
Subsequently, the buildings were used as a care institution until Silkeborg Municipality took over the area in 1987 and founded the Freshwater Center – and thus a new era began for Vejlsøhus.
Environmental profile
In all of Vejlsøhus' business areas, we actively work to reduce the impact on our shared nature and environment. This applies to both the external environment and the internal environment. Since 1996, we have had an environmental policy that sets the course for daily environmental work, as well as an action plan that describes the specific activities and initiatives.
The Green Key
Vejlsøhus Hotel & Conference Center is environmentally certified with the Green Key. This means that we are assessed based on approximately 70 environmental parameters, which ensures that we – and the other certified companies – make an extra effort in the environmental area for the benefit of our guests, employees, the economy and, not least, the environment and the climate.
Vejlsøhus Hotel & Conference Center has had the Green Key for 27 years. The employees are therefore at the forefront of environmental work and actively participate in continued development.
